Sr. Mary Anne Peterson Scholarship Fund

The Annual Fund at St. Bernard High School has been solemnly dedicated as "The Sr. Mary Anne Peterson Scholarship Fund."  Traditionally, the Annual Fund raises money for both curricular programming and student financial aid and scholarships at St. Bernard High School.

Sr. Mary Anne's vision for St. Bernard High School now rests in our hands;
Help us continue to be a thriving community that offers excellent education and
Catholic faith formation to all who seek it.

For over 30 years, Sr. Mary Anne Peterson had a heart like no other for Viking students and alumni.  Her life's work was to keep the Viking family intact, whether that meant raising money for student scholarships to maintain healthy enrollment, or mailing newlsetters full of updates from Playa del Rey to thousands of alumni.

Today, through the Sr. Mary Anne Peterson Scholarship Fund, deserving students who qualify based on their grades, leadership & citizenship, and family need are awarded merit scholarships and financial aid.  These young Vikings are an essential part of our thriving, diverse, and spiritually centered community.

Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Sr. Mary Anne Peterson
at St. Bernard High School.

A long-standing and beloved member of the Viking family, Sr. Mary Ann Peterson will be commemorated in perpetuity with a Scholarship Fund in her name. Sr. Mary Anne, as she was known, kept alumni connected to SBHS with her invitations, events, and of course the Alumni Viking Report! When Kevin ’72 and Cathy Chilton pledged $70,000 to St. Bernard High School, they requested that their gift be used to establish the Sr. Mary Anne Peterson Scholarship Fund. This fund will provide scholarships and tuition assistance to many new Vikings who will continue living the mission of St. Bernard High School, just as Sr. Mary Anne Peterson did.

Sr. Mary Anne Peterson arrived at St. Bernard in 1965 as Principal of the Girl’s Division. She stayed involved with St. Bernard for 30 years thereafter as an assistant librarian and substitute teacher, returning full-time as Director of Alumni between 1982 and 1997. Sr. Mary Ann believed fiercely in the SBHS mission to educate young Catholics, saying, “Teenagers are the most gorgeous people in the world—generous, enthusiastic, and hope-filled in the true Christian sense of the word.”

Sr. Mary Anne’s unrivaled passion was for alumni, however. Sister was instrumental in doing the painstaking work of building an alumni database and keeping the Viking family intact across the nation and the world through her mailings. Of alumni, she said, “It does my heart good when I receive letters that say, ‘I wouldn’t be where I am today, in terms of success, if it had not been for the education and love I received at SBHS.’”
